Wow! This is such a great site. Thank you to those responsible. When I saw the pictures they took me back to wonderful memories, important lessons learned, and a time when life was a lot less complicated. We were able to do so much through band and experience a great deal from the trips we took. And the fun! I can appreciate (now) how Mike and Cricket let us feel the weight of responsibility that was placed on our shoulders to work as a team on the field or in a parade and expected the best in us. I think they also understood that band was a place where the ordinary could accomplish the extraordinary with the dedication to excellence and team work. We accomplished so much! Its great to think back to.... M.B.A. in Wisconsin (tornado watch and all), Sweeney's black spray painted truck and the chicken incident, band camps, L.O. City Limits sign in the band room, the Balloon Crossing sign caper, Stix, the huge speakers in the band room, T.P. Rubinos house while the Ragio's party watched (I was there as a technical advisor as I remember), Crickett's smile and Rubino's "Look", Mr. Rubino Sr.'s Spaghetti Dinners, Mrs. Avilla's cookies!!, the Rose Parade trip, the #1 drum line! and "MY WAY", just to name a few. e doing. I've been married 21 years in June, live in the Sacramento area and have 4 boy's(20,16,15,&11). My husband Steve teaches High School in the San Juan School Dist., and is also a Plumbing contractor and I get to be a stay-at-home mom- although I think that is a contradiction in terms when your boys play football!

I'd love to hear from you out there.

Happily,
Kathee

Well I finally graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a degree in Biology and am now back in Mo Hill working.  I haven't really played since I went to Carnegie Hall with the Cal Poly Orchestra in 2003, but if I had the money I would certainly be in the market for my very own xylophone or marimba!

Hi all-- it has been so long. I teach high school English now and I'm a MFA student (poetry). I've been teaching for 5 years & love it. Haven't forgotten about music-- I'm still playing guitar. Right now I play in a band of sorts with my boyfriend who also plays lead guitar & keyboard. Mostly for fun but I can't live without it. Played some weddings too. Love writing songs...Miss the days of bus travel and European night swimming, among all the other things...Hope you are all well and happy. Update me anytime...

Hi Emerald Regime alumni.  My family moved out of Morgan Hill, so I probably won't be hanging around our fair city much more; however, if any of you want to visit or need a couch to crash on, you're always welcome up in Berkeley, just shoot me an e-mail. I'll be graduating in 2009 with a major in History (with a Western American emphasis) and a minor in music (got to love that French Horn).  Thanks for all of the great times and giving me the tools that have helped me through life.

Marched: 1978  Brass (Trombone)

1978 was a time of a lot of turmoil in my life that unfortunately spilled out into my life in band and led to some unfortunate consequences for which, years later, I have tried to make peace with. I met a great gal from Gilroy and decided to straighten up my life. I look back at that time with a lot of personal regrets, but also as the one thing that might have saved my life. I learned that talent wasn't the key, that if you just outwork everyone, you will rise to the top. Life changing stuff, thank you Mike and Cricket. I am married in Gilroy for 19 years this April, 3 children, and I serve on the Gilroy School Board (Yes Greg, I entered politics...would you have guessed back in '78?) and I fight for music education even in troubled economic times. Band saved my life and made my life what it is. And at the time, it seemed so confused, but when I got some perspective and understood what it all meant, I treasure it more than almost anything else. I also started doing stand up comedy in the bay area as a hobby, so look for me at Rooster T Feathers or the Improv. I also made it onto one album as a guest musician (guitarist). Mr Rubino, you once mocked our worshiping of KISS and told me about this wild guitarist Jimi Hendrix...well...I now think KISS is a bad joke and Hendrix is a genius. I learned. I was just a mixed up kid. Thanks for teaching me basic music theory and the scales, including the melodic and harmonic minor scales. I use them now!!! Just on the guitar!

For those of you who may not have heard, on April 9, 2003, a trusted and dearly-beloved band director passed away, leaving a legacy which spanned over forty years. I have set up a permanent memorial guest book to honor J. Martin Baum at the San Jose Mercury News. Please click here to sign the guest book and to add your own personal comments. Thank you very much for caring. . .

After graduating Live Oak in 1981 I attended U.C. Davis for two years and a quarter as a Landscape Architecture Major. Following that minor departure, I transferred to San Jose State University, changed my major to music and graduated with a B.A. in Music Performance.

Immediately after graduating I enrolled in the teaching credential program at SJSU. During my first phase of student teaching, the East Side Union High School District hired me as music director of Independence High School from the fall of 1988 until the spring of 1994.

From the fall of 1994 to the present time, I have been Instrumental Music Director at Arroyo High School in the San Lorenzo Unif.  In my spare time, I conduct the Morgan Hill Wind Symphony on Wednesday nights (7:30 - 9:30 PM at the MH Presbyterian Church on Dunne and DeWitt Avenues). If anyone is interested in joining up to play in this "player's ensemble," please stop on by and bring your axe!

Oh, and I did finally get married January of 2002 to a fine cellist who doubles as a percussionist! Arlene and I are doing well.

For those who attended Rubino's retirement dinner, I was the unwitting passenger when Jeff Wilson (who, ironically, is now the band director of the LOER) thrashed Rubino's Isuzu Rodeo.  After years of therapy recovering from the harrowing experience, I was referred to a certain occupational therapist (coincidentally, an LOER alumnus) who assisted me in becoming a stratospheric trumpet player. Thanks, Steve.  May I have some chocolate pudding?

I never liked football, but attended all the home games (marching of course).  My oldest son (child 3) now plays highschool football.  My oldest daughter is married (10 months).  My second daughter is starting college this month.  I have an 8th grader and a 6th grader.  I also have a surprise and she is just turned a year.  Marching band was my favorite activity all through highschool.  Some days I wish that I could just resign being an adult and go back to just hanging out with friends and marching for Rubino. However, I am happy with my life and am enjoying another happy childhood.

Hello all!!!  I sure miss all of you guys!!  Things are terrific here at Brigham Young University.  I'm currently in my third year and in the process of applying to the Nursing program.  I'm loving life and still enjoy playing the flute.  I joined one of the University Symphonic bands this past semester and more than anything it has reminded me of all the wonderful memories of being a part of the Emerald Regime.  No-I'm not married yet-LOL!  In fact, I'm filing the paper work in June to serve a mission for my church!  I'll keep all of you posted as the details arrive to where I'll be going! I'm so excited!!  I hope everyone is doing well!!  I loved reading all of your comments.  Please drop me a line anytime and say "Hello!"  And thank you again - Mr. Rubino and Mr. Wilson!!  We could have never made it as far as we did without you!  Best wishes to all of you. xoxoJen

How fun to see this and catch up on some of you that I marched with me!  I am recently married and living in Salt Lake City, Utah.  I teach 4th grade and love it!  My husband, Jon, is currently finishing up in school at the University of Utah, and then on to law school.  We love it here, and it's fun to look back and remember the good times we had in marching band.  As a teacher, now I know how hard Mr. Rubino worked to get us in line!  It's especially fun to look back, as my niece, Jennifer Mounteer, just got back with the band from Paris. It's fun to compare experiences.  Good luck to all of you!

To all my friends and those that could've been:

If I only knew then what I know now, I would've been in band my last two years.  I put work above band and friends, and for that all I can say is I'm sorry.  I'll always remember that year fondly.  I guess it's a good thing I finally came to realize what my priorities are so I can enjoy my children and help them not make the same mistakes.  I hope you are all doing well.

Take care,

Jackie
