The Live Oak High School Marching Band and Color Guard was started in the summer of 1970 with 36 band members and 10 color guard
members, with Michael Rubino and Cricket Hathaway as directors. Summer instruction was held on the old Live Oak campus (now Britton Middle School). The band and color guard performed for
home football games and in local band reviews. |
|
The band and color guard grew from that small start in 1970 to 146 members in 1976 when the band went on its first national tour
to Whitewater, Wisconsin where they captured the Marching Bands of America Grand National Championship, winning "best
winds," "best marching," and "best general effect." |
|
The band and color guard continued its winning ways for the next three years, winning dozens of local and regional awards and
again winning the Marching Bands of America Championship in 1978 with the highest overall point score ever recorded in that
competition, a record which still stands today. |
|
In 1979 the band and color guard was turned over to Mr. Lee Carpenter during the
Rubino's leave of absence. For the next two
years, the band experienced the loss of the 9th grade class and the imposition of additional graduation requirements which
prevented many students from joining the band. |
|
In 1981, Mike and Cricket Rubino returned to the Emerald Regime on a part-time
basis, working with the band and color guard two
evenings a week and weekends to avoid class schedule conflicts. Although the only practice time
were those evening and weekend sessions, the band and color
guard began rebuilding the pride and precision that had made them famous. |
|
By the mid 80's the Live Oak Emerald Regime had come back and regained the entertainment and performance excellence that has long been their
trademark. |
|
Culminating a very successful season in 1986, the Emerald Regime won the Music Bowl West
competition, outperforming bands
from throughout the state to capture the sweepstakes title. |
|
In June of 1987, the Emerald Regime became the first High School Marching Band to perform on the Great Wall of China. As a
result of that honor, the Emerald Regime was invited to perform in the 1987 Macy's Day Parade in New York City. The band's
first major trip (to China) was called the "Journey of a Lifetime." |
|
May 1989 saw the Emerald Regime travel to Buckhannon, West Virginia and capture the Grand Sweepstakes Award which is
based on the cumulative scores of field, parade, concert, and jazz competitions. |
|
During the Easter vacation of 1990, the Emerald Regime and family and friends embarked on the "Journey of a Lifetime, Part II"
to the Soviet Union. The trip included a visit to Helsinki, Finland and performances in Leningrad and Moscow. |
|
In April of 1992, the band performed in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong during "Journey of a Lifetime Part III." More
recently, the band performed in London, England in April 1994. |
|
In 1996, the band went on part four of its "Journey of a Lifetime" with a return
trip to China and Hong Kong. The band toured and
performed in Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. The band is also the second ever to perform on the Great Wall of
China. |
|
In April of 1998, the band returned to East Asia for part five of its
"Journey of a Lifetime" which included tours and performances in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and
Singapore. 1998 is also the year the Rubinos retired from the band after
26 successful seasons. |
|
Following the retirement of the Rubinos, Mr. Jeff
Wilson becomes the third band director of the Emerald Regime. From 1998 to
the end of the school year 2002, Mr. Wilson (a former band member, and
percussion instructor for the Emerald Regime) continued the excellence, pride,
and traditions that the Emerald Regime is famous for. |
|
The Emerald Regime traveled to Europe for part six of its "Journey of
a Lifetime" which took the band to Switzerland, Germany and France in the summer of 2000. |
|
For the 4th of July, 2002, the Emerald Regime traveled to
Washington DC. In addition to touring our Nation's Capitol, the band
marched in the National Independence Day Parade and attended the National Symphony Orchestra Fireworks
performance. Click here for more information and pictures
from this trip. |
|
2003 is the year Mr. Greg Bergantz takes over as the
fourth band director for the Emerald Regime. Due to the continuing school
district cuts in the music programs, and the opening of a second high school in
the district, the number of students in the Emerald Regime have hit an all time
low. Even with numbers falling below 60 students, the Emerald Regime,
under Mr. Bergantz's leadership, is still taking top honors in the small band
competitions! |
